Our Small Animal Doctors

Charles P. Ulrich, DVM:
Dr. Ulrich graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Biological Science, an MS in Zoology, and a DVM (in 1982).  He is the managing partner of Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital.  His special interest is avian medicine.  Dr. Ulrich is a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, American Veterinary Medical Association, California Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Veterinary Hospital Managers Association, and the Kern County Veterinary Medical Association.  He is married and has four children; two boys that are currently attending college, and two girls in high school.  Dr. Ulrich is an avid, albeit mediocre, golfer.  He also enjoys traveling, collecting wine, cooking, and growing orchids.

Jennifer McGraw, DVM:
Dr. McGraw graduated in 1998 from Colorado State University.  She grew up in Lompoc, California, but moved to Colorado in her senior year of high school.  Dr. McGraw received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology with a minor in Biochemistry.  Dr. McGraw always aspired to be a Veterinarian, and was proudly involved in animal related organizations (such as no-kill cat shelters) from a young age.  She has recently become a Partner of BVH.  During college, Dr. McGraw's interests were cancer research and Raptor rehabilitation.  Dr. McGraw has been with BVH since her 1998 graduation from Veterinary school, and is happily living in Bakersfield with her husband, her two children and her many (many!) pets.

Irene Takata, DVM:
Dr. Takata was born and raised in Los Angeles, Ca.  She attended USC and obtained her Bachelors degree in Biological sciences in 1984.  Dr. Takata graduated from Tufts University Veterinary College in Massachusetts in 1991.  Immediately following, she completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Memorial Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.  Dr. Takata enjoyed the challenging cases there, and soon became a staff practitioner in a large referral hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts.  In 1993, Dr. Takata and her husband re-located to Bakersfield.  Dr. Takata has been with BVH since 2005.  She enjoys all aspects of Veterinary Medicine, but particularly loves critical care cases.  Dr. Takata is a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.

Michael Keese, DVM:
Dr. Keese was born and raised in Bakersfield, and his family has been here for six generations.  He graduated from West High School before attending UC Santa Barbara to receive his Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences.  He did his post graduate studies in Health Care Management at Cal State Bakersfield.
Dr. Keese began working for BVH at the original location on Chester Avenue.  He started as a Veterinary Technician, and was trained by a fellow tech who later became his wife!  Dr. Keese entered the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 and worked his way through school working graveyard shifts at the UC Davis ICU Teaching Hospital.  Dr. Keese praises his work at the ICU as one of the most invaluable experiences he had while at UC Davis.  His interests include soft tissue surgery and radiology.  His hobbies include camping, fishing, hunting, golfing and pretty much anything involving the outdoors.

Julie Betts, DVM:
Dr. Betts was born in Peoria, Illinois, and lived in the Illinois area until she moved with her family to Omaha, Nebraska a few years later.  Dr. Betts loved growing up in Nebraska, and as a result, attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln for her undergraduate studies.  She received her DVM from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas in 1992.  Dr. Betts moved to Bakersfield upon graduating and has been here ever since.  Dr. Betts practices small animal medicine, strictly on dogs and cats, and is very interested in internal medicine cases. She is married and has a ten year old son.  Dr. Betts enjoys her family time, and has two dogs, two cats and one horse.  Her hobbies include horseback riding, gardening, knitting and cross-stitching.

Sukhjit Dhaliwal, DVM:

Dr. Dhaliwal was born and raised in India.  She obtained her bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine while in India.  After receiving her Veterinary license she did an internship at Iowa State University.  Dr. Dhaliwal began working for Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital in 2009, and she has been a great addition to the BVH team.  Her interest is to practice veterinary medicine in a manner which is the safest and best for her patients, least stressful for her clients.  She is happily living in Bakersfield with her husband and her three children.  Her hobbies include painting and interior design.

Humphrey Yu, DVM:

Dr. Yu graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Biological Sciences degree in 2005.  Dr. Yu is a graduate of the University of Illinois veterinary program.  His special interest is emergency medicine and surgery.  Dr. Yu is a member of the California Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association.  During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Yu worked as a zoo keeper with the Sacramento Zoo and volunteered with a therapeutic riding association.  His hobbies include snowboarding, hiking and cooking.

Andrea Reid, DVM:

Dr. Reid attended veterinary school at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated with a class rank of second out of 129 individuals. During her veterinary education, Dr. Reid received over fourteen scholarships and awards for her interest in small animal medicine and academic achievements. Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Reid gained invaluable experience working with stray, injured, and abandoned animals at the Central California SPCA in Fresno- one of the highest volume animal shelters in the country. Her undergraduate studies were completed at UCLA, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.  She credits her involvement with Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar during her senior year at UCLA for giving her the push she needed to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Although she enjoys all aspects of being a general practitioner, Dr. Reid has developed special interests in dermatology, clinical pathology, and diagnostic imaging.  She lives in Bakersfield with her husband, two “career-changed” former service dogs, a cream tabby, and a Connemara gelding.
